El Coto was founded in 1970 in Rioja Alavesa and has grown from modest beginnings into one of the best known of Rioja producers. Today El Coto has over 700 hectares of vineyard in production across the three Rioja DOCa sub-zones of Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa. They also source grapes from all three areas, but mostly from Rioja Alavesa. Head winemaker Cesar Fernandez oversees production, starting with hand-picking into 350 kg crates to ensure the grapes arrive at the winery in pristine condition.

Modern and intelligently designed, the emphasis in the winery is on temperature control and gentle handling of the grapes. The grapes for this wine are sourced mainly from Rioja Alavesa (65%) with some from Rioja Alta (25%) and Rioja Baja (10%). Soils are mainly limestone and clay. The must is fermented in stainless steel temperature controlled tanks at 20-26C over a period of 20-25 days. Malolactic fermentation occurs.

The wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months in American oak and a further 12 months in bottle before release. Intense ruby red in colour. The nose is fresh and pronounced with excellent fruit concentration. The palate is clean and well balanced, with a core of strawberry fruit combined with subtle vanilla flavours from American oak. The finish is juicy and long.

Woodstock Octogenerian Grenache Tempranillo

Winemaking

Woodstock Octogenerian Grenache Tempranillo Red Wine 2013Grenache grapes were picked on 10th March 2013 at 15.5 Baume during a warm, early vintage. Grapes were traditionally fermented on skins and pumped over twice daily. The Tempranillo component was fermented separately and aged in old oak barrels before approx. 12% was blended to the Grenache, adding a savoury length and finish to this wine.

The Wine

Bright colour and lifted aromas of cherries, plums and raspberries. Tempranillo adds dried spice notes to the nose and savoury tannins to the palate. Lively and expressive on both nose and palate, this Grenache Tempranillo blend captures true McLaren Vale characters; silky structure with subtle complexities making it a great food companion.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy with a selection of Spanish tapas or a nice smoked duck on the BBQ.

A lifted nose displaying enticing aromatics of rhubarb, raspberries plums with hints of caraway seed anise and subtle white pepper spice.
Contrasting on the palate with rich flavoursome red cherries balanced by a bright acid structure and soft yet crunchy tannins.

For decades we and our neighbours tended to our frugal Grenache vines on sandy soils at Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale.

Commonly referred to as 80 year old vines, or “Perpetual Octogenarians”, their pedigree of quality became more evident over the decades. When the opportunity arose to become the next custodians of more of these meagre cropping, gnarly vines, the Collett family embraced them in 1988.

Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon

Woodstock Shiraz Cabernet Red Wine Woodstock Shiraz 2011

Winemaking

Woodstock 2011 vintage was very wet in all of South Eastern Australia. Our lower yielding vines with open leaf canopies were able to dry out between rain showers and ripen the small crops. Some vines in certain protected microclimate sites were unable to dry out and therefore excluded from our winemaking.  After fermentation on skins for a minimum of 5 days, this Shiraz was barrel aged for up to 14 months in carefully selected French and American oak barrels. 15% sees new oak barrels while the rest mature in 2 to 3 year old oak for complexity without oak domination.

The Wine

The Woodstock 2011 Shiraz shows a deep vibrant cerise colour with some youthful purple hues. An aromatic display of  savoury oak, ripe red berries and dark cherries with hints of cinnamon. The palate is coated with lush bursts of mulberries and spice,  joined by soft, youthful tannins and some balanced acidity which completes the structure. These youthful characters provide great promise for 3 to 5 years to come. This unique 2011 vintage offers softer tannins than normal, but retains that characteristic rich middle palate flavor of McLaren Vale.

Serving Suggestion

Our Dry Creek Federalist Zinfandel is hand-crafted to bring out the true individuality of the Zinfandel grape. The Dry Creek Valley has unique characteristics that make it especially well-suited for cultivation of this hearty, decidedly American grape.

The valley receives pronounced afternoon heat, but our vines are also cooled by the night air that creeps up the Russian River Valley from the waters of the Pacific Ocean, producing evening and early morning fog. Our vineyard enjoys the luxury of extended “hang time,” which produces more mature fruit, and results in rich, full-bodied flavor characteristics.

The Federalist Zinfandel has robust fruit with bright berry fruit character, and its lively acidity allows it to partner well with a wide variety of foods.

Torre del Falasco Amarone della Valpolicella wine is deep ruby in colour, this wine has aromas of plums, spice and dried fruit compote, which give way to a solid tannin structure that supports and accentuates the concentrated, dried-cherry fruit character. Long and spicy on the finish, with a bitter cherry-chocolate twist characteristic of good Amarone.

The grapes for the Amarone are grown on the steeply terraced hillside vineyards belonging to the co-op, where soils are chalky and poor.

The main feature of vintage 2009 was the early start of the growing season in comparison with previous years. The heavy rainfall that accumulated during the winter compensated for the heat and lack of rain in summer. Throughout September climatic conditions were good, with little rainfall and an accentuated difference between day and night temperatures. This undoubtedly enabled the grapes to reach maturity with excellent phenolic properties. The grape yields were normal though slightly lower than in past vintages. The wines achieved a good overall balance, with sugar concentrations within the norm.

Once picked, the grapes dried for at least four months in the Valpantena drying centre where temperature and humidity are controlled to ensure slow, even drying. During this period, the grapes lost 40% in weight. After drying, the grapes were fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks at between 18-22 degree C with maceration for 20 days.

Once fermentation was complete, the wine matured in French oak barriques for 18 months before bottling. It comes with the vintage information as follows: Vintage: 2009; Grape varieties: 65% Corvina/Corvinone, 35% Rondinella; Region: Valpolicella, Veneto, Italy; Winemaker: Luca Degani; Closure: Natural Cork; Classification: DOC; Alcohol (ABV): 15%; Acidity: 5.5g/l; Residual Sugar: 7.5g/l; Wine pH: 3.5.

Maule Valley

Garage Wine Co Lot 47 Old Vine Carignan Red WineSome wines are so much more than the sum of their flavours. Sure, this is packed with layers of captivating blueberry and bramble fruit wrapped in muscular tannins and rustic charm. But it’s impossible to enjoy with grilled meat without thinking of Don Nivaldo hand harvesting and producing this in his home.

This wine was grown by a small farmer in the Maule. It was farmed by hand and horse with traditional methods of dry-farming 70+ year old vines with vines.

The nose is floral, elegant and subtle, a little closed at first, becoming deeper and more nuanced with time in the glass.
The palate shows great, citric freshness with a thread of fine acidity going through its backbone with lovely depth of sweet purple fruit and very ripe tannins.

As the flavours rumble on, it hints at a darker Dr Jekyll side to the fruit. Simply delicious.

This wine is a tribute to the resilience of the ploughmen farmers of the Maule who have been stewards of the vines since colonial times.

In the vineyard

Sweet, penetrating blackberry and lavender pastille flavours are complemented by smoky oak and vanilla nuances and show a hint of peppery spices. Finishes with lingering florality, smooth, even tannins and very good length. 90 points.” Josh Raynolds, Stephen Tanzer’s ‘International Wine Cellar’, Issue 170, September/October 2013

A smooth, medium bodied and easy drinking wine that strikes a lovely balance with its blackberry, plum and dark cherry fruit characters coupled with classic leafy tones. Made predominately from Old Vine Cabernet Franc (85%), the balance of Cabernet Sauvignon brings out even more of the finesse to this wine. A ‘proper’ wine that, for the money, is generous on all fronts.

In the vineyard
The Cabernet Franc grapes are harvested from ‘old vines’ (35 years) sourced from the world’s largest grower of this varietal which is located in Lodi, Central California.

In the winery
To enable the true flavours and characters of the Cabernet Franc (and touch of Cabernet Sauvignon) to shine through, no wood/oak has been used.

Food Recommendations
This is is a food wine that really lends itself to vegetarian dishes. Try it with grilled egglpant or zucchini, or with meals containing green peppers (capsicums), cabbage, or herbs (particularly sage, thyme, rosemary or saffron). A versatile wine that is also fantastic with tomato based dishes; lighter meats such as Turkey or Chicken, along with game meats like duck; amd richer beef based dishes like steak or veal.

Manufacturer/Producer: Domaine Mad Barrau

A wine of real character, there is a wild ripeness of sweet scented fruit twinned with an edgy woodland perfume. The palate is incredibly long and very rich, scrumptiously juicy fleshy flavours that are counterbalanced and intertwined with the savoury crunchy rooty character of Cabernet Franc.

Producer Details
The Gard region lies at the southern end of the Rhne valley, a river valley which stretches from Lyon in the north to the Mediterranean delta in the south. The red wines here bear the supple textures and peppery influences of the Rhne in their Grenache and Shiraz, but also in their style of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Whites too extend the Rhne thread into the Gard – with Viognier infiltrating from the north (from its rarefied hideouts in Condrieu and Cte Rtie) and Clairette spreading its reach from the top southern Rhne enclave of white Chteauneuf-du-Pape. These grape varieties and the domaines we work with (Bahourat, Mas Barrau, Sources de la Marine and Montval) are all situated on the high plateau of the Costires de Nmes – old river beds of stony, free-draining soil of immaculately tended rows of vines on flat land in large blocks of vineyards, which facilitate very efficient farming and value-for-money pricing.

In the Vineyard
Cabernet Franc is much under-rated and rarely cultivated outside its traditional habitats of Bordeaux and Loire. At Mas Barrau in the Gard region of Southern Rhne, Samantha and Eric have worked to produce a wine that sets new standards for Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc grapes for this cuve came from a single Domaine family estate near Nimes.

Food Recommendations
Juicy lamb shanks, rich tomato based dishes laced with roasted garlic and pepper, marinated steak with mashed potato and green beans or savour it at the end of the meal over a good cheeseboard.

The vineyards are located in a hilly area in the commune of Montalcino, close to Siena. The estate has approximately 160 hectares under vine, planted at an average density of 3,500 vines per hectare. The average altitude is between 250 metres and 350 metres above sea level.

The 2008 harvest was carried out in ideal weather conditions. After a rather wet but not particularly cold winter, spring was quite normal, both in terms of temperatures and rainfall. Intervals of rain continued until mid-June, while higher temperatures in June and July alternated with cooler temperatures and further showers. Harvest took place at the end of September.

Maceration on the skins took place during fermentation and lasted approximately 15-20 days, together with frequent, gentle pumping over. The fermentation temperature was between 30-32 degree C. Controlling the temperature encouraged the extraction of good colour and soft, ripe tannins. The wine was matured in Slovenian oak casks for three years before bottling.

Opi (aka Rodolfo) was given his childhood nickname by his sister and it stuck. Such a gentle, shy, affable and modest man, it just s eems to fit.

On a recent visit we tried to get him to reveal how he makes wines so delicious that he has two permanently in our Top 20! He shrugged and said he simply follows the way his family has always made wine. That’s typical Opi – but not quite believable.

The truth is he has a gift – even if he doesn’t know it. Though the laughter in his eyes suggests that maybe he does. He crafts this great red from hand picked grapes grown at 630 metres altitude and oak ages it for six months. Great grapes, great skill – a winning combination. Enjoy this dark delight with spicy sausages, robust pasta or beef casserole.

Barón de Barbón wines always stand out for their supreme quality and value. The cellar was founded in 1926 by José Murúa Villaverde, a descendant of a long line of winemakers, but when he retired, the winery was sold.

In 1982 one of his sons – Julián Murúa Entrena – decided to repurchase the bodega to continue the family tradition. Julián now has all the latest kit and more than 5,000 oak casks for maturation of his finest wines. And his talented son Javier has now joined him. Made in a very good vintage, this superb Reserva was aged for two years in both French and US oak barrels to lend a lavish layer of spicy complexity.

It’ll show at its best with roast lamb or game, its redcurrant notes setting off the flavours of the meat perfectly.

Mission Estate has a 150 year history of producing outstanding wines at its grand estate in Hawke’s Bay on the east of North Island. The cellar was established in 1851 by Marist missionaries who had come to New Zealand from Lyons in France.

Today, it boasts vineyards in Hawke’s Bay, the prized Gimblett Gravels in particular, and also in beautiful Martinborough to the west. Of all its vineyards, Greenmeadows, planted in 1910, is closest to the coast, and ideal for aromatic Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc. Sea breezes keep the vines cool, extending the ripening period and helping to produce a wine with delicate ripe fruit and wonderful aromatics.

Crafted by top Kiwi winemaker Paul Mooney, this is a superb Pinot Noir. Perfect with white meats.

Australia is renowned for sumptuous Shiraz, with the likes of Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace, also from the Barossa, fetching well in excess of £100 a bottle. Black Stump Reserve too is a showcase red, yet priced within reach of us all. Winemaker Alan Kennett knows how to impress – his ‘everyday’ Black Stump once won a Trophy Prestige in Bordeaux of all places.

So with the benchmark set he applied his skills to supreme quality Shiraz from the region that was created with this grape very much in mind – the Barossa Valley. With American oak maturation the wine’s rich, full, smoky blackberry fruit has taken on seductive overtones of mocha and vanilla. It’s a fine fireside companion or partner to spicy Moroccan lamb or steak.

Padthaway, three hours’ drive south of Adelaide, was established as a viticultural area in the 1960s, its maritime climate proving ideal for elegant, complex red wines. And McLaren Vale of course is even better known for its ripe, succulent Shiraz.

Its winemaking history dates back to 1838. With meticulous care, Ben combined hand picked parcels to create a magnificent red of impressive power and finesse with a soft, silky texture. It combines three top red grape varieties, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, all sourced from prime sites throughout South Australia where the famous red soils – comprising sand, limestone and clay – provide perfect growing conditions.

The winemaker fermented each batch of grapes then carefully blended them prior to maturation for several months in small oak barriques. Ripe, rich and complex, this powerful red is perfect with steak and chips, or roast lamb.

This is a smooth, plummy Merlot from the Maipo Valley’s Viña Tarapacá, one of the most beautiful wineries in the world.

Its founder, Don Francisco de Rojas, travelled to France in the 1870’s and returned with vines from Bordeaux and Burgundy, planting them in the perfect grape growing environment around his classic colonial style house.

In 1992 new owners took over and invested considerably in the vineyards and winery, adding a humidity and temperature controlled cellar with a 4,000 barrel capacity for maturing the wines. All of this has taken quality a few notches even higher.

An all-time customer favourite, this juicy, rich and fruit laden Merlot is an ideal choice to go with lamb chops, rich tomatoey pasta, or tasty sausages and mash.

The Waxed Bat takes its name from the bats that used to flutter in the candle-lit cellar of Opi Sadler’s father. Fast forward several decades and it’s Opi who’s working his magic in the cellar – and taking the quality of his legendary Waxed Bat to new heights in the form of this very special Reserva edition.

Cassis scented Cabernet and spicy Malbec have been patiently barrel aged to create a silky smooth, round wine that retains all the vibrant fruit intensity that makes regular Waxed Bat so popular. And it shows that Malbec and Cabernet from Argentina’s high altitude Mendoza region is a match made in heaven. Smooth enough to drink solo but at its very best with garlic studded roast lamb or a juicy sirloin steak.

Decant early if you can.. This is a must have for anyone who likes Malbec!

Vasse Felix Heytesbury Wine 2010 Red wine

Vasse Felix Heytesbury

Red Wine 2010

Vasse Felix Heytesbury Wine 2010 75clA barrel of Vasse Felix Heytesbury is a selection from the finest parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Malbec from the 2010 Vintage. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend includes portions of Malbec and Petit Verdot, which are distinctly perfumed, flavoured and structured. Both complement the restrained power of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep vibrant red with a purple hue appearance. A delicate and sophisticated perfume combining notes of red currant and blackcurrant with savoury tones of dried jarrah forest floor, peppy leaf and hints of cured venison, leather, pot pourri and mineral ironstone. The wine lands with wonderful weight, with juicy red and blueberry fruit flavours and ultra-fine tannins. It quickly tightens and dries as the acid profile bursts to life and the savoury tannins take hold. The finish carries long with earthy dark chocolate, and hints of eucalypt and liquor cherries.

It is Treated individually in small parcels, the fruit was nurtured while on skins to ensure the preservation of fruit characters and extraction of the finest tannins. After an ideal duration of skin contact, each batch was transferred to French oak. The barrel types used were carefully selected to accentuate and enhance the intricate characteristics of the wine. The wine was matured in barrel for 18 months before all batches were graded. The combination of nature and nurture has created a sophisticated wine with a strong sense of place.

Moderate spring conditions in 2009 allowed for better flowering and fruit set than experienced in the previous year. High temperatures in late January/February saw rapid ripening for whites. Harvest timing was critical. Mild conditions in early Autumn allowed an extended ripening period for reds, which was ideal. It comes with the vintage information as follows: TA: 6.9 g per litre; PH: 3.45; Residual sugar: 0.53 g per litre.

Velvet smooth Aussie red made from Shiraz and Durif for intense bramble fruit flavours and a prickle of spice

Irresistible with a char-grilled steak or Sunday roast

According to winemaker Alan Kennett, when you combine Durif and spicy Shiraz “magical things happen”. Thousands of Black Stump customers seem to concur, which explains the wine’s decade of popularity. Black Stump owes its name to a mythical outback landmark, now part of the Aussie language. An expression of the biggest/richest anything “this side of the black stump” effectively means “in the known world”.
